Thanks to the amazing photographers, awesome friends and photo lovers that joined us to the show last night, and to the flamenco power band at the end of the evening that closed in style the first asa slideshow of 2012. I was a great pleasure for asa collective to have the chance to share with you this moments of photography and reflect about society issues, that the photographers raise with their projects.

KANU GANDHI'S MAHATMA

"These I believe are unique and extraordinary documentary photographs (1938-1946) of the 'Pre-Independent - Free India Movement', led by Mahatma Gandhi; inadvertently, documented by Kanu Gandhi, (self taught) when he was a young man. Unfortunately, he passed away, before I encountered his sensitive, exquisite and eloquent work, by chance."

Asa had the luck to meet the amazing Saleem, that shared with us the Kanu Gandhi's pictures:

"Photographs 1938-1946 - Curated by Saleem Arif Quadri

As 'Fate' would have it, I was introduced to the widow of Kanu Gandhi, Abha Gandhi in Rajkot, Gujarat, India in December 1992. Thus began an extraordinary journey towards rediscovering “Kanu Gandhi's Mahatma”.

...

When I further discovered Kanu Gandhi was an ardent photographer too, I inquired from Abha Gandhi what did he photograph? My expectations were confirmed when she replied 'Mahatma Gandhi, of course'. This delighted me.

Enthusiastically I requested, “Were any of his works available to see”? Suddenly Abha Gandhi got up with gracious springs in her legs, beaming with beautiful energy on her face, went into her home Rashtriyashala and came out a few minutes later with a white bundle neatly tied up which she placed in front of me.

This was the moment of rediscovery.

One man's vision, indeed. It was obvious to me that Abha Gandhi held a private archive of treasures, which deserved and demanded a wider audience. When she expressed delight at my suggestion of possibly curating an exhibition of Kanu Gandhi's images - although at that stage I had no idea or experience - where and how such an exhibition could be mounted.

On returning to England in January 1995, I was pleased to receive her written permission to my exhibition proposal.

Through a passionate commitment to a promise and a prayer I met Deirdre Figueiredo, the then Cultural Development Officer for Leicestershire Museum with whom I shared my thoughts of these wonderful images of Kanu Gandhi's work; from that moment we became inspired by a common cause, she also informed me of Rajkot being a twin town with Leicester.

Protectors of Sight by Sophie Gerrard

Sophie Gerrard (Scottish, b.1978) is an award winning documentary photographer specialising in contemporary environmental and social issues.
The work she presented at asa latest show, curated by Fiona Rogers, made most of the viewers' tears fall down when enjoying her slideshow being screen at Nomad. (I cried like a baby seeing such an amazing story being told with so much sensibility and humor).
Her photographies makes us doubt sometimes if that is a photgrpahy or a oil painting, having such power being expressed in the colors.

Tim & Matt Bowditch - Afghanistan Blueys

As part of the September show, Asa had the great pleasure to curated and co-produced with Tim Bowditch his amazing work, made by him and his brother Matt, Afghanistan Blueys.
This project documents the daily life during the war in Afghanistan, where Matt was when taking this Polaroids, being not only the soldier, as the photographer, having served in the war-torn country as a member of the Royal Marines. “Blueys” are the nickname given to any notes sent by soldiers to friends and family that are written on military-mandated blue paper.

It was a great experience working side by side with Tim, who showed much devotion and passion, as well as respect and appreciation to his brother engagement.

Thanks guys, great experience, keep that brother spirit that is so amazing to see!

Augustin Ribetez - The Dinner of the Lonely Man

Augustin Rebetez (1986, Switzerland) studies at the photography school of Vevey, Switzerland, and at Asa's September show, he shared with us his stop motion story of The Dinner of the Lonely man, that was curated by Diane Smyth and that is in competition in youki - Wels -Austria.
It is a charismatic story that he composed by sequenced photographies. If you want to know more check his website.

Claudia Sola - Being there

Asa last September show had the pleasure to have a great line up of artists.

Claudia was one of them, although not physically present, her soul totally embedded the room and the presents in her stunning telling story, a text with her thoughts and insights about the screen was read in the beggining of the screening of her show

"To what extent can you give chaos form in your work, without destroying the chaos by giving it form? This question often reappears in the works of Claudia Sola. She is constantly searching for new ways to place daily happenings into a universal context. This leads to works with strong political intention or results in a personal document, both reflecting the way we are: egos revolving in a social constellation."

The speed with which the photo and film fragments flash by in the work of Claudia Sola means that they are hardly readable, but you recognize them nevertheless, like words in a sentence. The quantity of images dazes one; their separate sizes vary, as does the rhythm with which they appear. Found footage is combined with material the artist has shot herself, old photos run together with contemporary pictures. Her images are arranged in a grid, and this structure determines the compelling visual cadence.

Saibal Das is not a photographer by chance, but has been handling the camera since his childhood days. He has inherited the love for photography from his father who also had lifelong loyalty towards the mesmerizing medium of light and shadow.

Saibal has been working with a number of known publications like the ABP, India Today, and Outlook since his early days. He is an internationally acclaimed visual chronicler and has won numerous accolades in his field.

Saibal’s current project of visually recording Chitpore, the most vibrant road of Kolkata, has already attracted much attention and has been published in the prestigious GEO magazine. Mike Fleming - One More Time For Just-In-Case

Mike Fleming received his Bachelor of Science degree in Photography in 2003 from Drexel University in Philadelphia. He became extremely active in the Philadelphia arts community- curating and staging events and performances at influential galleries and venues throughout the city. He also worked for Philadelphia’s premiere architectural photographer, Jeffrey Totaro, and was a member of several touring bands, giving Fleming, camera in hand, a unique perspective on the cultural landscape. He moved on to become a staff photographer for The Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he remained for almost two years before relocating to Alfred, New York. While there, he taught photography workshops at Alfred University and began collaborating on sculptural works with his partner, Alicia Eggert. He is currently back in Philadelphia and working as a touring musician again, with the band Sun Airway, and continuing to focus on sculptural and interactive works.

March is coming...

ASA collective have been working hard during this last few months and in March we unveil a few of the projects that have been keeping us busy.
Right in the beginning of the month - Mapping the Flâneur - the artwork supported by the Arts Council England that we have been working on with Wideyed (and what joy has been working with these amazing guys) under the baton of Yasmina Reggad @ Photo-Festivals - opens at the Format International Photography Festival in Derby. This artwork is part of the Collectives Encounter that includes some of the most exciting photo collectives producing work around the world...

We will be in Derby for the opening weekend of the Festival so if you are planning to head north (or south, east or west depending where you are based at) here is an agenda of the official events we will be taking part in Derby during the opening weekend:
3rd March - opening event for the Format Festival and later on the after party (hell yeaaa);
4th March - opening of the Collectives Encounter in which - Mapping the Flâneur - is included;
6th March - we will be at the Collectives Encounter talk.
So if you are in Derby and want to hook up just drop as a line or pop by one of this events... looking forward to that!

Also in March we have our bimonthly Slideshow Evening, it has to be rescheduled for later in the month but will be happening - and there will be surprising stuff on the line up - so wait for details coming out soon(ish).

Last but not least we will be launching a series of workshops that have been brewing for quite a bit (as you can see from the tab on the top of the blog). More information about this to be announced soon, also!

Guy Martin is a documentary photographer currently based in Budapest.
His primary focus is to document the burgeoning youth culture and rising
middle classes in post conflict societies and territories. In 2011 Guy will begin
a long term project to photograph hidden stories from the Palestinian West
Bank again focussing on adolescents and economically driven stories as
Palestine heads towards statehood in the coming years.

Brendan Hoffman- Haiti

Brendan Hoffman (b. 1980, USA) began his career as a freelance photographer

in Washington, DC in 2006 after working several years in the non-profit sector.

He divides his time between covering news and politics and working on

his own personal projects. The pursuit of pictures has taken him to a variety

of places, including Azerbaijan, Russia, Iraq, Mexico, Peru, Haiti, and the

Dominican Republic.

ASA collective special screening - 18th January - at City YMCA

ASA collective is doing a special screening in collaboration with the City of London & Cripplegate Photographic Society on the 18th January at 18:45 in the City YMCA - 8 Errol St, London EC1Y 8NX. Admission is free but places are limited, so arrive early to avoid disappointments.

The screening will be made of a selection of some of the best works show over the last 5 months of ASA collective slideshows and followed by a talk about the process of editing, selection and production of our event nights.

We have a guest curator this month, Anne Bourgeois-Vignon.

She writes about photography, commissions, directs and produces still and moving image for web and print, curates photography, and occasionally makes her own work.

The slideshow will be at Cafe B @ Cable Street Studios.

There will be great coffee, nice drinks and delicious tapas available. The show starts at 19:30 sharp (this is a projection be so please be there ten to fifteen minutes earlier so you can have a drink and find a seat) and join us for some drinks after.

Christmas time for change[s]...

Christmas is upon us and a week after we say goodbye to the old 2010 and welcome the new year with lots of excitement for what comes ahead.

This year that now ends was kind for ASA collective. To start we have initiated our projection evenings in September and had 4 fabulous sessions where we showed amazing work from committed visual artists from around the world and had a steady number of people coming to see these at the Cable Street studios venue-Cafe B.
It has been hard work but quite rewarding to see a room full of people hooked on the projection screen and cheering with enthusiasm at the end of each work shown.
For this we thank you all:
The photographers - for collaborating with us and allowing us to show your work at our slideshows.
Mariana Moura Santos at HyperGuetto for the ASA logo and the endless collaboration on all the past and future visual tweaking.
The crew at Cafe B for welcoming us and providing a place and support for this event.
Last but not the least to all the people that came down to Limehouse and all of you out there that followed the projections.

We also started to work on a programme of workshops (that you will soon hear about) and the production of collaborative work that culminated on the commission for a show at the Format Festival 2011 - check the tab on the top for more details on this.
It is rather exciting that a new collective like us has been given this opportunity to work with like minded people that love and care about photography as much as we do. We will be working with Yasmina Reggad from Photo Festivals and Louise Taylor, Richard Glynn and Lucy Carolan of Wideyed collective to put this show up and hope you can come along to see it in March 2011 in Derby.

So for the new year some changes and a lot of projects:

1. ASA collective projection evening is going bimonthly - in 2011 there will be a show every two months, so the calendar is set as follow: January, March, May, July, September and November. There will be other pop up shows happening throughout the year. We will keep you posted.
2. ASA & Wideyed show "Mapping the Flaneur" at the Format Festival 2011 - expected to run from the 4th of March to the 3rd April the Derby International Photography Festival has an extensive programme on which our show is included, check it out here.
3. ASA collective workshops - we expect to start these soon, more details to follow.
4. Lots of new things are expected as 2011 progresses so bear with us while we get this all going. ;)

What comes ahead is bright and exciting and we hope you can come along and join us. But in the meantime have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
